    Self Operated Control Valve FAQs

Quick answers for industrial buyers selecting self operated pressure reducing, temperature control, nitrogen blanketing and nitrogen relief valves.

A self operated control valve uses process pressure, temperature or another process variable as the operating energy for regulation. It does not require an external electric actuator or instrument-air supply for the basic regulating function.

A self operated pressure reducing valve senses downstream pressure and automatically moves the valve toward open or closed to maintain the selected outlet-pressure setpoint. Selection should be based on inlet pressure, outlet pressure, flow, temperature, medium and the required pressure-control range.

Use a nitrogen blanketing valve when a storage tank or vessel requires a controlled low-pressure nitrogen supply to maintain a protective vapor space as product is withdrawn or pressure falls. The required set pressure, nitrogen supply pressure, tank design pressure and required blanketing flow should be defined before selection.

A nitrogen relief valve is used to release excess blanketing or vapor pressure when the vessel pressure rises above the specified relief setpoint. It should be selected together with the tank pressure limits and the blanketing strategy so that supply and relief settings do not conflict.

A self operated temperature control valve uses a temperature-sensing element and mechanical or hydraulic transmission to change valve position as process temperature changes. The required control temperature, medium, valve size, pressure conditions and whether the valve is used for heating or cooling duty should be confirmed.

Provide the medium, inlet and outlet pressure, operating and design temperature, minimum, normal and maximum flow, line and valve size, connection, body material, required set pressure or temperature, allowable pressure drop and quantity. For tank blanketing or relief duty, also provide vessel pressure limits and nitrogen-supply conditions.

The regulating function is normally driven by process energy and therefore does not require an external electric power source or instrument air. Any optional accessories, remote indication or special project requirements should still be reviewed separately.
